The Lost Lectures

Changing the brain, from without to within.

This mind-bending talk by Prof. Tony Dickenson is about changing the brain ‘from without to within’, he discusses the mechanism of pain and reward and discusses how mind-altering substances work both in clinical and more recreational contexts. Expect everything from placebos to the much harder stuff!

Speaker Prof. Tony Dickenson

Prof. Tony Dickenson is a leading voice in the field of Neuro-pharmacology and the mechanisms of pain and how it’s controlled. His lab at UCL aim to understand the transmission and control of pain in order to  improve its treatment, either through better knowledge of mechanisms or characterization of novel targets. The group have studied how neuronal systems alter in patho-physiological states and how novel and licensed drugs produce their effects on pain processes. He also runs a module for undergrads called ‘Drugs and the Mind’ which for reasons unknown, has proved rather popular in the department!
