The Lost Lectures

Biomimetics, flight of the penguin.

Alex gives us a rare glimpse into some of the incredible innovation coming out of his lab, including a penguin inspired jet engine aircraft that manoevres without moving parts. He reveals how 3.6 billion years of evolution (or trial and error) can’t be wrong, and how this ‘stealing’ from nature is fundamentally changing the way we think about engineering.

Speaker Dr. Alex Parfitt

Dr Alex Parfitt is Head of Materials Research at British Aerospace Engineering (BAE Systems Advanced Technology Centre). A biologist turned engineer, he’s a world-leading authority on biomimetics and its use in development of innovations in defence technology. He also has a pet owl.
